Cup winning match report and other scores

Posted on Sunday, May 1st, 2011

In front of a crowd of just over 300 we retained the South Challenge Cup at Tynecastle today. The opening ten minutes was scrappy before we started to impose ourselves on the game by getting the ball down and passing it around. Just before the 20 minute mark we took the lead when a Dean Hoskins corner was headed goalwards by Chris Townsley and Omar Kader head flicked it into the net. We were playing some great stuff at this point with Jack Beesley and Gavin Malin both coming close. We did then seem to overly relax and City had their first real chance of the game when Ross ran through but Chris Flockhart dived full length to push his effort wide. City were just beginning to have more of the ball when we scored our second. A great run by Danny O’Donnell saw his cross hit the hand of defender Scott. The penalty decision seemed harsh but Gavin remained focused and drove the spot kick home.
City had more of the ball in the second half but we were disciplined in our play and it was no surprise when we scored our third, Ross Archibald cutting the ball back for Omar to knock home from three yards. Chris had to punch clear a series of City set pieces but we could and should have added to our tally. Ross Archibald did miss from the spot after Donal Henretty was blocked as he seemed set to drive home a fourth. It was a professional performance with some of our play in the opening period as good as it has been for several weeks. Both our own Malt and Hops man of the match award and that of the SFA went to Chris Townsley who had an impeccable game…although unusually he did get angry and lose his legendary calm after one late challenge from a City striker. Team: Flockhart, O’Donnell, Hoskins (Smith 84), Townsley, Sivewright, Kader (Fowlie 72), Beesley, Mcleod, Malin (Henretty 72), Manson, Archibald Subs not used: McGarrie, Finnie. Our next game is a league game at home to Lothian Thistle on Tuesday evening and congratulations to Gavin who has been selected for Scottish Uni’s in their fixture against the Irish Uni’s at Riccarton tomorrow afternoon…not sure if he will manage all 6 of the games we might have in the next ten days!
Elsehwere the Womens team beat the previously undefeated Forfar 4 – 3 at home in a league game with goals from Trish McFarlane, Hayley Lauder, Sarah Ewings and and OG. Our next game is the League Cup semi final against Rangers at Broxburn on Thursday evening.
The EoS 19s lost 3 – 1 to Craigroyston in the first leg of the Challenge Cup semi final, the next leg is next week.
Finally the Legends beat Lothian Thistle 3 – 2 in a close encounter this evening, the goals coming from Mark Robertson, Lawrie Tulloch and an OG.
