Lowland League | 2022 signs off with Hogmanay Derby

Auld Reekie. Athens of the North. The undisputed Home of Hogmanay. Street Parties, Fireworks at the bells and more importantly – The Lowland League North Edinburgh Derby!

A lunchtime clash between two old friends looking for the final bragging rights on offer as the curtain comes down on 2022.

With the winter conditions causing the fixture card to fragment, it’s been a disjointed December for both sides as they head into a match that sees three crucial points on offer in the game of the day in the Scottish Capital.

Seven points separate as many clubs in the top end of the table with Spartans getting back to winning ways last week, coming from behind to beat Gala 1-3 at Netherdale whilst Saturday’s visitors last turned out in competitive action three weeks ago at Falkirk Stadium, where they defeated East Stirling by a similar scoreline.

This meeting is the 12th intriguing encounter between the North Edinburgh pair since they first locked horns in 2016, with Spartans ahead in the tale of the tape going into the game having won seven times with the other four shared between Strollers and Drawn affairs.

Dougie Samuel will be keen for home advantage to offer an extra boost to his side’s chances and the well received pre-match hospitality event will bring a boost to the Spartan Army faithful numbers to cheer the team on.

With Hearts and Hibs not facing off until Monday at Tynecastle, what better way for your footballing neutral to spend a Saturday than heading along to watch a local derby in what looks like promising overhead weather conditions too!

Admission is £9 Adults, £6 Concessions with Under 16s able to watch footy for free (proof of age may be required as we’ve had some ‘mature’ bairns chance their arm and we don’t want to let the minority spoil it for everyone…)
