Lowland League | Colts reined in by Jack in the box

Posted on Sunday, February 9th, 2020

A slick Spartans move finished off by Jack Smith five minutes before the interval saw Dougie Samuel’s side come away from Cumbernauld with three points and consolidate fifth place in the table following results elsewhere over the weekend.

New signing from Newtongrange Steven Thomson was added to the bench, a move that saw Cameron Dawson head to Nitten on loan.

Just 33 seconds were on the stadium scoreboard when the hosts had the ball in the net. Thankfully, for the travelling support in the stand, the linesman directly below them had his flag up to curtail any home side celebrations.

Spartans looked to push forward in an evening that saw at least four seasons within the 90 minutes. Blair Atkinson made a break in midfield, play raged on as he was unceremoniously scythed down however the move fizzled out and the stalemate continued.

Scott Maxwell forced the home keeper into a decent save as the Malt and Hops Man of the Match looked to break the deadlock.

The opening – indeed, the deciding – goal came with just over five minutes to go before the interval. A move involving six passes from the middle of the paddock found Blair Atkinson on the wing. His low cross evaded the defender on the six yard box and Jack Smith was in place to scoop up the scraps and tuck the ball home.

Now, the second half saw Twitter ‘go down’ and your friendly scribe traditionally curates your match report from the timeline…

There was a penalty shout by Adam Corbett as the skipper looked to have been flattened by the keeper at a corner midway through the second half. Instead, it was given as a foul the other way, much to the man with the armband’s dismay.

Gregor Woods came close with a shot that grazed the crossbar as Spartans continued to put further light between the sides.

New recruit Steven Thomson made his Spartans debut when he replaced Nicky Reid.
