FNQ Cup | Holders set out on the road to hat-trick of trophy triumphs

Posted on Friday, August 16th, 2019

Dougie Samuel’s Spartans begin their defence of the Football Nation Qualifying Cup title with a tough cross-Border clash against fellow Lowland League outfit Berwick Rangers.

The Ainslie Park side, who lifted the silverware in May following a 2-0 win over Camelon, head across Hadrian’s Wall looking to build on last weekend’s win at Gala Fairydean Rovers.

Samuel’s charges have won the trophy twice since during it’s sponsorship by Football Nation and an opening round win in one of the trickiest ties of the weekend would put them on track to securing the hat-trick of red and white ribbons on the cup.

One player who hopes to feature is striker Nicky Reid. The teenager scored his first competitive senior goal for the club last Saturday, setting up the victory sealed by Blair Atkinson.

Reminiscing on his historic moment, 16 year old Reid noted, “It was headed out towards me and I knew I had to get a good touch then my head over it, as in my training the week before my shooting hadn’t been up to much! What made it more enjoyable – if at all possible – was that it was my weaker foot too!

“It was definitely the greatest moment I’ve felt in my football career so far – seeing it hit the back of the net and hearing the cheering from the Spartans fans.”

The sides last met in August 2016 in the opening round of the Irn Bru Cup. A midweek tie at Sheilfield saw Spartans run out 0-3 victors on the night against the then League 2 side. With a plethora of personnel changes since, it makes for an interesting afternoon on the cards.
