GeoSonic Lowland League: Spartans climb table with comfy win against Students

Posted on Sunday, January 27th, 2019

Spartans climbed to fourth place in the GeoSonic Lowland League table with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Edinburgh University at Ainslie Park.

In what was a decidedly dreich day in the North of the city, Spartans set out their stall early on, attacking the Café end with real intent.  It took just five minutes for that early pressure to translate into the first goal of the afternoon.  A telling run by Jamie Dishington up the flank saw him race past his marker to deliver a pin-point cross that was despatched by Jack Smith who nipped in ahead of the static University defender to flick the ball past Tait.

The Students looked for a quick response and some fine play by Murray saw him charge up the park, only for his final delivery into the danger zone flagged for offside.

Spartans looked to increase their lead and Blair Tolmie was close when he climbed high above the pack of players in the box from a corner, only for his header to clear the crossbar.

Then, with ten minutes til the break, that lead did indeed double.  A calamity in the University defence saw Jamie Dishington capitalise and the Academy Graduate, with the freedom of Ainslie Park, composed himself to round Tait and poke the ball into the empty net.

There was to be further – and final – space between the sides on the stroke of half time when Gary Cennerazzo was the recipient of the ball inside the Student’s box and he unleashed an unstoppable drive that would have required a trio of Tait’s to stop it from bulging the back of the bag.

Half Time: Spartans 3-0 Edinburgh University

Barely had the juicy insides of the John Bain and Sons half time pies been licked off the spectators lips before Spartans had two wonderful chances to further extend their lead.  Blair Atkinson was up first then Jack Smith – both seeing their efforts thwarted by seasoned campaigner Tait.

Blair Tolmie had to look lively back in his own box and the talismanic defender perhaps utilised the ‘better being lucky than good’ phrase when he done enough to get his laces to the ball to take it away from a pursuant in green.

A double sub midway through the half saw Scott Maxwell and Stephen MacDonald replace Dishington and Greenhill.

A chance from a Maxwell corner shortly after fell onto the head of Adam Corbett but his effort went over the bar.

The final replacement of the afternoon saw Jason Stevens swap with Blair Atkinson.

Jack Smith looked as if he was enroute to bag a brace when he rounded Tait inside the area, but the Spartans striker didn’t count on a backtracking Student to get himself onto the line to hoof the ball away.
