William Hill Scottish Cup: Spartans bow out at Kilby

Posted on Monday, October 22nd, 2018

Spartans bowed out of the William Hill Scottish Cup following a 1-3 defeat to East Kilbride, ending their interest in this year’s competition at the 2nd Round.

It was Spartans who took the lead after just six minutes when Academy Graduate Adam Corbett pounced on the ball inside the box after Blair Tolmie won an aerial challenge to set up the defender who lashed home, much to the delight of the visiting support.

East Kilbride rallied and it took a fine stop by Blair Carswell to push a Craig Malcolm effort behind for a corner.

With just five minutes til the break, it was all square. With the ball bobbling around the Spartans six yard area an attempted clearance by Ian McFarland appeared to ricochet off Malcolm and the ball agonizingly crept beyond Carswell into the net.

A controversial handball decision offered the hosts an opportunity from a 20 yard free-kick on the hour mark.  BJ Coll cleared the wall only for Carswell to push it onto the crossbar.  It fell fortuitously back in play and Malcolm was first to react to tap home from a yard.

The visitors had loud appeals for a spot kick when a cross into the home penalty area by Willie Bremner appeared to strike a defender

Spartans looked to press for an equalizer but they couldn’t penetrate the Kilby defence and with twenty minutes left on the clock, the home side secured their passageway into the 3rd Round with a third from Robbie Winters.
