Sammy’s Spartans out to shoot down The Shire

Posted on Friday, September 23rd, 2016

It’s back to Ferrari Packaging Lowland League activity on Saturday for Spartans when East Stirlingshire are the visitors in the only fixture in the competition this weekend.

Ironically, it is on Scottish Cup weekend – both teams have a bye into the second round – that the teams meet, with both previous encounters coming in the oldest national trophy in the world.

It’s honours even between the sides to date with Spartans winning their first ever match in the Cup back in 1978 by the odd goal in five whilst The Shire squeezed out a 1-2 win in the 3rd round against an injury-ravaged Spartans during the 2010/11 season.

With The Shire looking to bounceback into the SPFL at the first time of asking and Spartans seeking the chance to leap into the league above, a win for Dougie Samuel’s side would narrow the gap to just four points at the top of the table in what promises to be the most exciting season yet.

After last week’s win in the Borders sunshine, Samuel has a quartet of returnees available for selection in the shape of Jack Beesley, David Greenhill, Dean Horribine and Chris Townsley  – one of a handful of Spartans players locking horns against their previous club come 3pm.

The match kicks-off at 3pm.  Admission £5 Adults, £3 Concessions and Under 16s are free.
