Dylan’s double guides u20s to win over WattA Dylan Tait double helped Spartans under 20s get back to winning ways on Friday night in foul conditions at Ainslie Park. With the rain sweeping across the Academy, it was more Heriot Wet than Heriot Watt who were the opposition in a game where both sets of players and Referee George Calder should be applauded for their endeavours. Spartans took the lead in the 14th minute after Elliot Redmile was unable to hold an attempt at goal and Dylan Tait swooped like a seagull on chips to send the rebound into the back of the net. The lead was to last just four minutes. Alex Imlah was penalised for an infringement inside the box, leaving Calder no option than to point to the spot. Ruaridh MacVinish stepped up and despite Cameron Feather getting his fingertips to the ball, it was all square. Anthony Laing looked like he’d restored the single goal advantage in the 29th minute when his header from an Andrew Mair corner was cleared from under the crossbar by the man on the post. The home side didn’t have long to wait for that second goal – two minutes to be precise – as Harry Girdwood latched on to the ball before beating his man to then drill low and hard beyond Redmile. Half Time: Spartans 2-1 Heriot Watt The soggy Spartans went from drookit to new kit with a change of jersey at the break as the players emerged from the comforting warmth of the changing room for the second half. It was a challenging quarter of an hour or so that ensued with both teams enjoying possession however they couldn’t translate it into favourable attempts at goal. That changed in the 68th minute when Duncan Player leaped like a salmon at the back post to nod home Mair’s inch-perfect in-swinging corner kick and put further light between the sides. Then, with eleven minutes left, Dylan Tait rounded off a successful night at the office, grabbing his second of the evening to earn a victory that sees Les Atkinson’s side move into 6th place, just 5 points off leaders BSC Glasgow in what is shaping up to be a close fought Under 20s competition.
