Spartans and Morton to remember Montford ahead of Scottish Cup stramash

Posted on Friday, November 28th, 2014

The Romance of the Cup returns to Ainslie Park this Saturday when Greenock Morton are the visitors in 4th Round of the William Hill Scottish Cup.

Both teams go into the match defending proud unbeaten runs, with the Spartans currently 14 games without defeat whilst the visitors have conceded just two goals in a six match record that includes two bites at the cherry against Airdrie to set up today’s eagerly anticipated clash.

The sides met earlier in the season at a wet and wild Cappielow in the Petrofac Training Cup, the hosts squeezing out a 1-0 win in what was the first ever meeting between the clubs.

A similar score line for the home team in Saturday’s tie will suit Manager Dougie Samuel as Spartans set out to defy the odds against the League 1 leaders.

Samuel said, “It will be extremely tough against quality, full time opposition however it’s also cup football where shocks can and do happen. Our focus on Saturday is on producing our best level of performance on the day and we’ll see where it takes us.

“Our victory over Clyde FC in the last round is evidence our group can rise to the occasion. It was a wonderful day, one to live long in the memory and we will need to be on our best game to claim another scalp.”

On the player front, skipper Kevin Sivewright sadly misses out due to suspension. He joins long term injury victims Michael Herd and Robbie Ross on the sidelines. Sivvy’s place in the heart of the defence will be taken up by the industrious Mikey Bruce.

Ahead of the game, former Greenock Morton Director and lifelong fan Arthur Montford will be remembered by a minute silence.

The Scottish sports broadcasting legend passed away earlier this week aged 85 and as a mark of respect, players and spectators will join forces to celebrate the life of a man as famous for his wonderful catchphrases as he was for his collection of fantastic sports jackets.

With a bumper crowd expected for Saturday’s game, we’ll be hoping for a good old stramash and maybe a goal from an impossible angle!

Admission prices for this match are: Adults £12, Concessions £8, Under 12’s will be admitted free of charge.
