Scottish Cup Preview: Spartans out to Defy the Odds against Clyde

Posted on Friday, October 31st, 2014

The William Hill Scottish Cup reaches Round 3 as Spartans welcome Clyde to Ainslie Park as the Road to Hampden continues.

The last time Spartans played host to Clyde ‘at home’ was also in the same competition, when the then East of Scotland side held their loftier opponents to a 1-1 draw at City Park, with current Club Director Phil Hobbins sending the SpartanArmy wild, opening the scoring after just 8 minutes.  You can read his recollections from a chilly January day in 1999 in the match programme.

Heading into the cup tie on the back of a 10 match unbeaten run, Spartans Manager Dougie Samuel was looking forward to locking horns with the SPFL 2 outfit,  “On the park, we go into Saturday’s game in a healthy position, with arguably nothing to lose.  Playing against higher ranked opposition means that we find ourselves in the unusual position of going into a home game as genuine underdogs; that said it’s a tag we will set out to enjoy.”

After a shaky start to their own campaign, Barry Ferguson has taken his Bully Wee boys from second bottom to 6th place, with a run of five games without defeat. Two players identified as being an integral part of the resurgence are Scott McManus and Kevin Watt, who Samuel describes in his match programme notes as “an exciting ‘front 2’, a real threat and talent at Clyde’s disposal.”

In the Spartans camp, Samuel has a strong squad at his disposal with several players back in contention for first team football following injury and unavailability.  The Manager is also boosted by a rich vein of form shown by his defence coupled with a host of players getting in on the goals at the other end.

Can Spartans Defy the Odds?  Kick-off is 3pm.

Admission will be by cash at the gate at the following prices; £8 for adults, £5 for concessions and FREE entry for all under-12s. Due to the anticipated large crowd at Ainslie Park, entry will be via the turnstiles at Pilton Drive and Pilton Avenue – both open from 2pm.

In the event of the match ending in a draw after 90 minutes, a replay will take place at Broadwood on Saturday 8th November.
