Scottish Sun Lowland League: Spartans 1-2 Edinburgh City

Posted on Thursday, August 7th, 2014

Michael Bruce opened his Spartans goal scoring account on Wednesday night however it wasn’t enough to prevent his side from narrowly losing the Edinburgh derby against City at Ainslie Park.

Spartans went into the game looking to build on their opening day Scottish Sun Lowland League success against Stirling Uni however they found themselves a goal behind after just four minutes.

Mark Osbourne’s cross from out wide evaded the outstretched glove of Kevin Swain with John Dunn waiting in the wings to nod the ball home.

The men from Meadowbank doubled their lead on 17 minutes.  Ian McFarland was upended in the box by Danny O’Donnell leaving Referee Mike Taylor with no option other than to point to the spot.  Osbourne stepped up and sent Swain the wrong way to give City a 0-2 lead.

Spartans rallied from the restart and created a couple of chances to get back into the game. Beesley asked the question of keeper Andrew Stobie from a free-kick and Keith McLeod, playing in his 399 game for the Club, couldn’t direct a tricky opportunity towards Stobie’s goal.

The home side were finally rewarded for their efforts in the 33rd minute when a goalmouth stramash saw the ball pop back out to O’Donnell and his lob back into the danger zone was guided home by the head of Bruce at the back post.

Half Time: Spartans 1-2 Edinburgh City

Spartans started the second half with some urgency.  The opening five minutes played exclusively in the City half and Motion could perhaps count himself unlucky not to see his shot land in the net rather than on top of it.

A fractious second half ensued with Spartans chasing what proved to be an elusive second strike to draw level and City happy to soak up pressure with a view to counter and kill the game.

As the rest of the game unfolded, neither side threatened the men between the sticks at either end and the final whistle sounded to the despair of the Spartan Army and delight for the pocket of City fans.
