Points dropped at Preston

Posted on Saturday, September 28th, 2013

Preston Athletic kept up their impressive home form with a hard fought 2-1 victory.

Preston have made a good habit of scoring early goals this season. It was therefore no surprise when Gary McCormack opened the scoring in just the second minute. A long ball was played by Steven Philip which McCormack had to use his pace to get to. He muscled his way past Kevin Sivewright before his near post strike slipped under the arm of Scott Bennett.

Most of the match was a midfield battle with both sides struggling to create any clear chances. Danny Main had the best Spartans chance of the first half however his powerful strike from 10 yards out flew just over the bar.

Preston started the second half strongly and it was McCormack who doubled the advantage in the 53rd minute. A quick counter attack set trialist Robbie Arthur free on the right wing, his cross evaded the Spartans defence and fell to McCormack at the back post who fired it into the far corner of the net.

Jack Beesley set up sub Chris Anderson with a neat pass in the box. The Spartan striker rounded the keeper however his shot was cleared off the line by Richard Ramsay.

Beesley found Danny Main with a freekick in the 76th minute. Main rose highest to get his head onto the ball just a few yard out however John Gilbertson managed to make a point blank save. From the resulting corner the Preston defence were caught napping which allowed Beesley space on the right to cross a ball into the box which bounced off Preston defender Richard Ramsay and into his own goal.

Spartans had most of the ball in the final few minutes however struggled to create any clear chances and Preston held on for the three points.
