So near, yet so Forfar. Pre-season friendly ends in defeat.

Spartans went down 0-2 to SPFL 2nd Division outfit Forfar Athletic in Tuesday’s keenly contested pre-season friendly at Ainslie Park.

7 new faces featured in our squad in a game played in front of a crowd in need of ice lollies instead of brollies as the late Edinburgh sun shone in the North of the Capital.

Our visitors came to the Academy fresh from their first outing of the summer on Saturday – a 1-0 win over Turriff United.  For Spartans, it was a chance for the players to get game time under their belt ahead of this weekend’s Ramsdens Cup clash v Threave Rovers.

The game kicked off a few minutes later than billed however the Forfar men made up for lost time by taking a 3rd minute lead.  Former Spartans hitman Omar Kader teasing his way down the right flank before sweeping in a low cross to allow Chris Templeman the easiest of strikes from all of a yard.

Many of the fans who’d been enjoying a cold beverage in the Academy Café were oblivious to the early goal and thought Chris Anderson had almost secured his side the lead against the loftier opposition when his net bound shot was chalked off by the stand-side Assistant Referee for offside.

Robbie Ross nearly opened his goalscoring account for the Club on the half hour after quick thinking by Beacher at a free kick saw the former Edinburgh City striker break into the box before being thwarted by Hill in the Forfar goal.

Half-Time: Spartans FC 0-1 Forfar Athletic

Jack Blaikie replaced Danny O’Donnell to make his debut as the teams made their way back onto the field for the 2nd half.

Forfar nearly doubled their lead moments after the restart as Bryan Deasley sprung the offside trap however the could only force his shot to trouble the wrong side of the net as he sliced it wide.

Both teams were evenly matched as the game rumbled on towards the hour mark, with neither keeper looking terribly troubled as a midfield joust ensued.

A trio of subs came on as the Spartans bench looked to give game time to all ahead of what will be a fantastic tw0-legged affair against Threave.  Whatley, Brown and Henretty replacing Beacher, Motion & Anderson.

The low setting sun started to cause the players all sorts of visibility issues despite the newly built flats opposite the stand offering a bit of a screen.

As the temperature cooled off the pitch, the tempo heated up a bit, with the fingers of both keepers being stung by shots at either end as the game started to open up as it entered into it’s final quarter.

With 15 minutes left of this keenly fought pre-season encounter, Forfar killed the game off with a second goal.  Sean Muhsin let fly from some 25 yards and his shot could only be agonisingly parried over his own line by Bennett.
