Ground out draw at Gretna

Posted on Wednesday, March 6th, 2013

After a win at the weekend in the King Cup, the Seniors turned their attention back to league football with a visit to Gretna.

Returning to the side for this midweeker were Sivewright, Henretty & Manson as we looked to extend our lead at the top in the only Premier match on the card.

Making his 350th appearance in the iconic Spartans jersey was legend Keith McLeod. Could Cloudy add to his 241 goals?

Both teams found it hard to compete against the conditions as the freezing driving rain put paid to any hope of fast flowing football.

A decent crowd inside Raydale Park saw the home side have the better of the opening exchanges however neither team could break the deadlock and the teams went in at half-time with neither goalkeeper troubled.

We started the second half attacking the end housing the vocal band of Gretna fans who entertained throughout.

After being booted about the park for some 60 minutes or so, a replacement was required – yes, the ball had finally given up the ghost!

Martin and Ferguson were introduced to the game as we searched for a way passed what was a well marshalled home defence who had done their homework.

With the game entering into its dying stages, McLeod looked like he’d won it when he connected with the ball from 6 yards however a Gretna defender just got enough of his bootlaces on the ball to send it agonisingly over the bar for a corner kick.

Another clean sheet and a point earned on the road against a side who didn’t allow us to play the expansive game we’d have like to have performed.

Full Time: Gretna 0-0 Spartans

Malt & Hops Man of the Match: Chris Flockhart. Despite a lack of goalmouth action, the horrid conditions and slippery ball meant the big shot-stopper had to be on top of his game.

Team: Flockhart, Manson, Cennerazzo, Sivewright, O’Donnell, Grant, Beesley (Ferguson), Motion, Bremner, McLeod, Henretty (Martin)
