Winning Saturday

Three wins as the Seniors beat Whitehill, the Juniors have a great win at Tranent and the Amateurs reach round 5 of the Centenery Cup.
A crowd of just over 250 gathered at the Academy with famous Spartans Stewart Fowlie, Ross Archibald and Alex King amongst the crowd. Gavin Malin and Scott Fusco came in for Kevin Sivewright and Kerr Dodds in the Seniors starting line up but it was Whitehill who made a flying start. Chris Flockhart had to look sharp to tip one effort over the bar before the visitors took the lead when Munro hooked home following a corner. We woke up and began to play with more pace and aggression. Chris Anderson made space but his effort was saved. Danny O’Donnel then played the ball into Keith McLeod’s feet inside the box for Keith to turn quickly and drive the ball into the top corner. All square after 25 minutes. The remainder of the half was absorbing as both teams moved forward at pace but the half-time whistle went with the scores still even.
We’re not sure what was in our half time drinks but we played as well in the second half as we have done this season. Our second came from the spot when Gavin drove home. A short header back from Hall was picked up by Omar Kader who was pulled back by Hall just when it looked he would knock the ball into the net. On the hour mark the third came when Omar’s great run down the wing was cutback to John Grant who netted his first for Spartans with a sublime finish. The fourth followed soon after, a piece of Chris magic ended up with Omar slotting home from just inside the box. Ex Spartan Andrew Sinclair should have pulled one back but Danny O’Donnel made a great block. We played out the game in control. The Malt and Hops man of the match went to Keith McLeod for an inspired performance leading the line and a superb equaliser. Team: Flockhart, O’Donnell (Beesley 84), Hoskins, Fusco (Donnelly 87), McKinnon, Manson, Malin, Grant, Kader, McLeod, Anderson (Finnie 82) Subs not used Veitch, Henretty
Ross Elliot scored twice and Sean Wringe once as our Juniors won 3 – 2 at Tranent. Tranent started the game in second place with the scoreline showing the excellent potential we have in our young team.
The Amateurs beat Linlithgow Thistle 4 – 0 in the Centenary Cup with Nick Reid returning to the fold. The goals came from Andy Hornell 2, Jamie Campbell and Cammy Clark.
