Seniors with last gasp win and Juniors go down

Posted on Saturday, December 17th, 2011

A last minute Keith McLeod solo effort gave us a 2 – 1 win over Strollers today in an exciting encounter in front of a crowd of almost 200. A Kerr Dodds injury meant a place on the bench for him and in came Chris Anderson to the starting line up. Strollers started much brighter and a header from a corner hit the bar as we looked sluggish. It was no surprise when they opened the scoring in the 15th minute. Ally McKinnon brought down Scott Gormley in the box and he blasted home the spot kick. We huffed and puffed without creating much and Strollers were looking dangerous on the break. A piece of Chris Anderson magic wide created an opening but his cross eluded everyone. The game became tousy and Strollers picked up two quick bookings just before the break with Spartans ball boys struggling to keep up as the ball was heading in every direction from Strollers clearances and time wasting tactics.
We started the second half well and a piece of Omar Kader magic brought us level on the 50th minute mark. Omar picked the ball up wide and beat four players before slotting home from 12 yards. We started to dominate possession but Strollers were defending strongly. Chris then drove wide from the edge of the box on the hour mark after a rare loose pass from Strollers. Jordan Finnie then came on for Chris but we struggled to create clear chances. The atmosphere then dipped after a neighbours call to the Academy meant a ban for the vuvuzela much to the frustration of the singing fans. Danny O’Donnel, Donal Henretty and a couple of Strollers players were booked in quick succession as the clock wound down. Just when a draw looked very likely in the 90th minute Keith McLeod picked the ball up on the edge of the box, held off a defender then beat the next man and slid the ball home from 8 yards. The entire Spartans team apart from ‘keeper Chris Flockhart ran to congratulate Keith in a huddle by the corner flag. In the remaining minute Chris plucked a dangerous free kick out of the sky and the final whistle went. Another great game with Kevin Sivewright picking up the Malt and Hops man of the match for keeping the defence tight as we pushed forward in the second half. Team: Flockhart, O’Donnell, Fusco, Sivewright, McKinnon, Malin, Manson, Kader, Henretty, McLeod, Anderson (Finnie 69) Subs not used: Veitch, Donnelly, Beesley, Dodds
The Juniors were depleted with a number of injuries and went down 2 – 0 to Dunbar in a league game.
