Seniors come out on top in stuffy league match

Posted on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

The Seniors continued our current good form with a 2-0 victory over Lothian Thistle tonight at Ainslie Park. Both teams rested some key players in what was a typical end of season match.

The first half was a largly uneventful affair other than us rattling the Lothian crossbar.

The second half started in a similar fashion with both defenses remaining strong and with both sides making mistakes in the midfield area neither were able to create much in the way of clear chances.

In the 71st minute, as the sun set over North Edinburgh, we eventually took the lead. A Dean Hoskins cross being headed home by Ross Archibald. Just as Ross made contact, a Lothian defender and keeper Kevin Swain collided. After several minutes of treatment Swain had to be taken off injured and without a sub keeper a Lothian striker had to take over between the sticks.

The sub keepers first piece of action was to pick the ball out of the net as just a minute later some lovelly play on the edge of the box set Donal Henretty free to fire home a second.

We continued to press for more however the make shift keeper pulled off some magnificent saves including a fine block to prevent Ross Archibald scoring another.

It finished 2-0 and the players have just 48 hours before our next game away to Edinburgh Uni on thursday night.

Malt & Hops Man of the Match: Dean Hoskins for a hard working shift and a cracking cross for the first goal.

Team: Flockhart, O’Donnell, Hoskins, Townsley, Fowlie, Malin, Finnie (Smith), Henretty (Sinclair), Archibald, McLeod, Beesley: Unused: McGarrie, Lawson
