Spartans Arch-ieve victory to progress in cup

Posted on Saturday, April 9th, 2011

The Seniors will meet Whitehill for the 4th time in a month following a solid 4-0 victory away to Easthouses Lily today.

Injuries and a suspension meant there were a couple of changes to the team from midweek with Stewart Fowlie, Omar Kader and David Etalecoming into the team to replace Gavin Malin, Donal Henretty and Keith McLeod.

Following an even start, we started to take contorl of the game. In the 22nd minute, David Etale received the ball in the box. He turned round 4 defenders before crossing along the 6 yard line. The ball, only half cleared, fell to Danny O’Donnell who fired it back into the box towards Ross Archibald whose flicked header sent the ball into goal to open the scoring.

We were awarded a penalty in the 30th minute when Omar was brought down in the box by the Lily keeper. David Etale stepped up to take the kick however his low strike was saved by the keeper before being cleared by the Lily defence.

Just a few minutes later though and we did eventually extend our lead. Jack Beesly scroing a wonderful right foot strike from outside the box which flew into the far top corner.

Chris Smith game on to replace the injured Etale at half time and almost had a chance to score in the 49th minute when he chased down the keeper following a passback. The Lily keeper was just able to clear the ball away with the young Spartans striker inches away.

It took until the 62nd minute for us to further extend our lead. Danny O’Donnell was the provider again with a great cross which was headed home by Ross Archibald for his second.

Ross then completed his hat-trick with his third header following a corner kick in the 86th minute to complete the scoring.

A good performance and we now go into our game with Whitehill Welfare on wednesday night. Kick off is 6.30pm

Malt and Hops Man of the Match: Ross Archibald – there were several strong performances today but Ross was once again superb and showed real killer instinct and the reason why he has been wearing the number 9 shirt for most of this season.
