Spartans secure 3 points against Selkirk

Posted on Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

The Seniors secured a strong 4-0 victory over Selkirk, who visted Ainslie Park for the second time in 4 days.

Alex King caming in to replace Omar Kader was the only change from the weekend’s squad. Spartans started strongly with Keith McLeod and Ross Archibald forced the Selkirk keeper to make early saves.

It only took until the 17th miunte for the deadlock to be broken. Dean Hoskins played a fantastic cross with pace was met at the back post by Gavin Malin, who placed his shot beyond the keeper and into the far corner of the net.

In the 30th minute Alex King then doubled the lead, firing home a well placed shot from the edge of the box.

Into the second half and we continued to control the game. In the 55th minute King won a midfield battle and charged forward with the ball. He played a fantastic ball to Donal Henretty in the box, who fired a low shot into the far corner with his left foot.

Robbie Manson almost scored with an outrageous lob attempt from 35 yards. The ball beat the keeper Selkirk and appeared to be dropping in however it rattled the top of the bar and bounced clear of the goal line.

Selkirk were reduced to 10 men and there were several other books before 2nd half sub Jordan Finnie completed the scoring with his first ever goal for the Senior side, a neat flicked ball over the Selkirk keeper to make it 4-0.

Malt & Hops Man of the Match: Alex King for yet another impressive midfield battle. Gavin Malin was not far behind him, also having a great midfield performance.

Team: Flockhart, Henretty (Finnie 80), Hoskins (Fowlie 78), Townsley, Sivewright, Malin, King, Manson (Smith 78), Archibald, McLeod, Beesley Unused subs: McGarrie, Seeley
