Management thoughts on our win at Riccarton.Mike says –“We eventually came through to secure the points yesterday and put us top of the league albeit having played a game more than Sammy and his boys. We made hard work of it but Heroit-Watt must take a lot of credit for their stubborn defending especially having been reduced to 10 men early in the game. The sending off galvanised the students who showed a lot of spirit and great organisation thanks to Michael’s promptings. On the other hand we relaxed a little too much and waited on things to happen. Our build up was too slow and for long spells it looked like it was going to be one of these days. I thought we improved just before half-time and after the break we kept the pressure on the students. Having said that the result was still in the balance when Beezer came on. We had pinned the opposition back and they were tiring but the breakthrough still eluded us. We wanted to bring Jack on, try Omar on the right and as Archie looked in a more confident mood than Danny the big man was sacrificed. Enter Mr Beesley and the game changed. His delightful chipped goal relaxed the whole team and although we didn’t score 2 and 3 until the final minutes we ran out comfortable winners. Jack is still feeling his knee a bit and Alex King is still not 100% fit. Archie looks back to full fitness and it was good to see Chris Smith get another cameo appearance. Stewart is obviously frustrated at the moment but he understands that as a team we churned out another clean sheet and that his day will come. Big Towner’s remarkable recovery from last Saturday kept Stewart on the bench and with David on Army duty (he scored with his right foot in a 2-0 win yesterday) Craig McGarrie made up our bench and the entire depth of our squad. Craig like Stewart has seen the defence doing well and he’ll also have to wait his turn. He did get 90 minutes for the Juniors last Saturday to keep his eye in. We were down to play Preston next Saturday but they have a Scottish Cup replay on their hands. With Edinburgh Uni travelling up to Brora also to play a replay there’s a very good chance we will be playing Selkirk as they were down to play Sammy’s boys. Watch this space for confirmation.” Mike |
