Weekend ReportsThe Seniors beat a good side from Stirling University 2-1 at Ainslie Park. There was a relatively large attendance at The Academy to watch this Scottish Challenge Cup semi-final however any late comers will have missed Omar Kader’s very early strike that put the home side in front. The game then lost it’s original excitement with both teams failing to test the goalkeepers before Stirling’s Michael Pentland leveled the score before half time. In the second half, Ross Archibald found himself one-on-one with the Stirling ‘keeper at close range, Filler made a good save however Ross was fortunate to find himself coolly knocking the rebound into the net and Spartans into the cup final at Tynecastle Stadium. Unfortunately Spartan’s star striker and this season’s top goalscorer, Keith McLeod, failed to make his 250th appearance for the club a truly memorable one as he failed to score. Spartans will face Gretna 2008 in the final, who beat Whitehill Welfare 5-2 in the other semi-final.Team: Flockhart, Gerrard, Sivewright, O’Donnell, Archibald, Hoskins, Manson, McAuley (Henretty), King, Kader (Malin), McLeod. Unused Subs: Fowlie, Vinelli, Smith. Across the road at City Park, The Juniors maintained their unbeaten home league record with a convincing 4-0 victory over Harthill Royal. Kenny Young broke the deadlock in the first half with a free kick from just outside the box. Michael Moffat doubled the lead with a wonderful left foot shot. Into the second half and Harthill were reduced to nine men following several incidents of disent. Gary Bannon then made it three, picking up a pass from Kenny Young after a freekick inside the box following a pass back that was picked up by the keeper. Nick Reid then wrapped things up. Dale Robertson did well on the left wing. Reid turned his cross onto the bar, collected the rebound, shot against the keepers legs then eventually scored with this third attempt. Harthill finished the game with nine men following a further red card again for dissent. The Juniors will face a much harder test next with in their home fife and lothians cup tie against Premier league Arniston Rangers. |
