Last minute defeat for Women’s team

Posted on Sunday, August 16th, 2009

Our Womens team went down 3 – 2 to Celtic today in the first round of the League Cup.  It was a pulsating tie.  We had the better of the opening exchanges forcing several corners but didnt take the chances created.  The turning point in the half came in the 25th minute when ‘keeper Jo Hutchison was badly injured in a collision with a Celtic striker.  She hobbled on but after Celtic took the lead substitue and outfield player Claire crosbie had to take her place.  Celtic scored again before half time and the tie looked dead.  Two goals in the opening 20 minutes of the second half however and we were right back in the game, Di Barry and Shivvy Rooney scoring.  Celtic had more of the play but we defended well and looked sharp on the break.  Di had a good chance to score the winner with four minutes left but her shot went inches over.  With extra time looming Celtic scored the winner, a drive through a forest of legs from the edge of the box nestled in the bottom corner.  A disappointing end to a match where we had worked exceptionally hard yet came away with a defeat.

Elsewhere our EoS 19s went down 3 – 2 to Inch Colts 21s in a friendly (goals from Alan Chalmers, Andrew Sinclair) and the our Sunday Amateur team drew 3-3 in a league game against Ryrie’s Alba .
