Spartans mde a disappointing start to the defence of their East of Scotland League Premier Division title with a 3-1 home defeat to Whitehill Welfare on the opening day of the season.

In what was the first competitive fixture to be played at Ainslie Park, Whitehill striker Kevin Haynes made the most of a defensive mistake to give the visitors the lead before Keith McLeod equalised for Spartans from the penalty spot just before half time. A wonder strike from Whitehill defender Ross Johnston and a breakaway goal from Andrew Kidd gave the Rosewell team the advantage. Spartans had limited oppertunities in front of goal and will look to improve on this performance against Lothian Thistle in next weekend’s cup tie.

Junior: Dechmont Foklift League Cup group game
Newtongrange Star 3, Spartans 2
Spartans were unlucky to lose in their first  match in the juniors, going down 3-2 to Superleague new boys Newtongrange Star in a League Cup group game at Victoria Park.

Star took the lead in the first half before Adam Perry equalised for Spartans. Only 20 seconds into the second half Newtongrange took the lead before extending  it shortly afterwards. Perry was on the scoresheet again to reduce the deficit, but despite an excellent second-half performance the equaliser never came.

Next up for the junior team, Spartans play Armadale Thistle in the League Cup on Tuesday night. The match will be played at City Park with a 7pm kick off.
