Spartans exit League Cup

Posted on Saturday, April 4th, 2009

A poor performance from us and a gritty performance from the Vale saw us exit the League Cup today.

With injuries, illness and suspensions there were quite a few changes in the Spartans line up from Rosewell last week.  Vale changed from their usual 4 4 2 to a 4 5 1  formation and although we held the upper hand early in the game our poor passing and lack of attempts on goal gave the home team confidence and a belief that this might just be their day.

It was 0-0 at half-time and we actually improved after the break shooting downhill and into the wind. Maybe when Daryl gave us the lead 2 minutes after the break we thought the game was won and for a while we pressed for a second. As the half progressed however, we were guilty of what we have done a few times this season – giving away stupid free-kicks to a team who can’t get near our box but now have the opportunity to push men forward and launch the ball into the area.

From a Vale free kick which was actually ours as Michal had won the tackle and was impeded going for the loose ball, we cleared the danger to about 35 yard were a Vale player gathered it and fired an unstoppable shot in the bottom corner. Vale’s tails were up and they scored a second from another set piece 5 minutes from time.

In a season littered by bad discipline our day was completed with Danny giving the referee some verbal’s in injury time and getting sent off for his troubles.

A bad day at the office and another exit from a cup by us.

The Spartans team was Flockhart, Hair (O’Donnell 55 mins), Hoskins (Kader 88 mins), Opilka, Gerrard, Preston, King (Malin 73 mins), Manson, Devlin, McLeod and Etale. Subs not used Walker and Henretty.
