Douglas Samuel awarded MBE in Queen’s Birthday Honours List

Wednesday, June 1st, 2022

Spartans Manager and Community Football Academy CEO Douglas Samuel has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to association football and the community of North Edinburgh.

Douglas has been at the Academy for two decades, driving the Charity forward to being an integral part of the North Edinburgh community.

The Academy, amongst many other projects, provide youth work and homework clubs to young people with hot meals and a weekend breakfast club, ensuring that all were guaranteed a healthy meal that day.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Douglas transformed the Academy into a food distribution hub; distributing over 75,000 packed lunches, over 3,700 ready meals and over 800 weekly food parcels, and everything from clothing to arts and crafts packs.

When free school meals were not available, the local Primary School discreetly identified families for the Academy to provide seven meals per person, per household every weekend to help to feed those local families in most need. A phenomenal 53,000 meals were distributed – an outstanding achievement.

Congratulations, Sammy – we are super proud!

GeoSonic Lowland League | Spartans earn point with aid of Atkinson

Sunday, April 14th, 2019

A second half strike by Blair Atkinson saw Spartans maintain their unbeaten record against East Stirlingshire and earn a share of the spoils in a tense affair at the Falkirk Stadium on Saturday in the penultimate GeoSonic Lowland League match of the season.

Following his recovery from injury, Adam Corbett was restored to the heart of the defence whilst Ian McFarland returned to the side.  Meanwhile, Alan Brown made his 200th appearance in Spartans colours – a tremendous achievement.

The swirling wind and biting chill in the shade may have been more homely for penguins but for the fans in the stand,  it was a shivery start to a match that saw Spartans have the bulk of the early possession, with the opening chance falling for the visitors as Stephen MacDonald squared the ball to Scott Maxwell but the shot didn’t quite match the build up play.

A tremendous turn of pace by Gary Cennerazzo up the touchline saw him whip in a dangerous cross that was met by the flying head of Jamie Dishington however the defender made enough of a nuisance of himself to put the Spartans man off and the effort went narrowly wide.

It may have been an end of season clash however the energy on the pitch was far from subdued.  Indeed, on occasion it was perhaps guilty of overexhuberance and certainly Cennerazzo would have agreed when he was crudely chopped as he looked to make another telling run.

HT: East Stirlingshire 0-0 The Spartans

Despite the cold temperatures, there was more than enough hot air exuding from the mouth of one particular home fan who didn’t appear to be a fan of the Scottish capital and if we were a restaurant, I don’t fancy we’d get a rave review on Trip Advisor either…

Back to the game and acrobatic Alan Brown once again showed his worth at the back when he made an energetic two touch clearance that drew warm applause from the decent numbered travelling support.

Football and fine margins are perverse bedfellows at the best of times and Blair Atkinson would undoubtedly testify to that as Cennerazzo’s deflected cross potentially threw the striker by the narrowest of margins and he could only get limited contact on the ball and force it wide from close range.

Then, at the other end, contrary to the flow of the game, the hosts took the lead from the spot.  Adam Corbett adjudged to have handled the ball in the box and the home shouts were rewarded with a penalty that was duly despatched down the middle by Andy Rodgers.

Comebacks are certainly no stranger to the Spartans rollercoaster season and with eleven minutes left on the clock, a deep Alan Brown cross was well controlled inside the box by Blair Atkinson who didn’t need to wait on a written invitation to despatch into the back of the net.

Neither side were to find a winner in the closing stages, meaning Spartans need to avoid defeat against Cumbernauld Colts at Ainslie Park next weekend in the final game of the campaign to finish in fourth place.

BetFred Cup: Spartans head West to tackle the Spiders

Friday, July 20th, 2018

Spartans continue to build on their impressive start to their inaugural entry into the BetFred Cup as they head to the National Stadium to take on SPFL League 2 side Queen’s Park.

With two draws from the regulatory 90 minutes against League 1 outfit Dumbarton and Tuesday night’s exceptional 2-2 draw at the home of Premiership club St Mirren that made widespread media headline news, Spartans head west keen to preserve their technical unbeaten run in the competition, but bonus points in each game being surrendered via the lottery of a penalty shoot-out.

Duncan Smith is the man in the middle for what promises to be another exciting instalment for the Ainslie Park side who qualified for their first BetFred Cup involvement following their Lowland League triumph last season.

It is to be remembered too that this is still a pre-season tournament too and the results so far pay testament to how far the club has come over the last couple of seasons at least.

Squad news sees almost a full squad available for Coach Derek Riddel who keeps fort in the dug-out whilst Sammy sits it out as he continues to recuperate at home.

Kick-off at Hampden is at 3.00pm.  We’d love to see a strong SpartanArmy at Hampden for the game.  Admission: Adults £14, OAP’s 65 and over £5, 16 and under £3, Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Pay at the gate

Spartans supporters will be housed in the William Hill Stand.

Silverware secured as Spartans lift Lowland League Cup

Sunday, May 21st, 2017

Goals from Ross Allum, Blair Tolmie and Craig Stevenson secured Spartans’ second trophy of the season with a 3-0 win over BSC Glasgow in the Final of the Geosonic sponsored Lowland League Cup.

It was a frantic start to the final with both sides looking to stamp their authority on proceedings early on however there was little to trouble the keepers in the opening exchanges.

Then, with 10 minutes on the clock, Spartans took the lead.  A defensive faux-pas by Matt Nevin in the BSC back division allowed Ross Allum to race in on goal to slot home past Stephen Barr into the empty net.

Spartans had the stand-side Linesman to thank when he lifted his flag to deny Robert Jones from scoring an equaliser five minutes later.

Both technical areas were certainly engrossed in the afternoon’s events, with the Fourth Official having to do his bit for NATO with a peacemaking mission to cool things down.

Ross Allum was close to doubling his tally and the Spartans lead when he worked his way into the box, only for Paul Keys to put in a timely tackle.

HT: Spartans 1-0 BSC Glasgow

The second period didn’t live up to it’s more frantic first half cousin and it took a while for either side to carve open an clear cut opportunities.

Jamie Dishington’s tenacity in midfield saw him win the ball and thread it to Ross Allum, only for the striker to be crowded out by a plethora of BSC defenders.

With just under a quarter of the match to go, Spartans finally got one hand on the trophy when they extended their advantage.

A Scott Maxwell free-kick from out wide found Ross Allum inside the penalty area and his net-bound shot was flicked home by the head of Blair Tolmie who was found poaching at the back post.

The proverbial icing on the cake came with 5 minutes left on the clock.  A touch of trickery and nifty footwork by Jack Beesley saw the playmaker slalom past defenders before squaring the ball to Craig Stevenson who tapped home from close range.

FT: Spartans 3-0 BSC Glasgow

Team: Carswell, Herd, Maxwell (Corbett 83), Tolmie, Greenhill, Beesley, Dishington (Hay 88), Allum (Saunderson 88), Stevenson, Brown, Townsley.  Subs (Not Used) Thomson, Comrie, Gilpin.
