Juniors away to Stoneyburn

Friday, May 4th, 2012

Tomorrow we travel to Stoneyburn for a League game; having played very well in our last 2 games only to lose out narrowly was very disappointing both from a management team perspective and from the player’s perspective. Last Saturday we were extremely hard done by as the referee awarded a penalty kick to Whitburn in the 88th minute to the utter disbelief of everyone inside the Ainslie Park Stadium however sometimes that’s the way things either go for you or against you.

Then on Wednesday night we travelled to Livingston where we played the much better football and competed very well against a strong physical side, we created a number of really good chances but found the Livingston goalkeeper in great form, we lost the first goal from being on the attack and went in 1-0 down at half time, we came out in the second half with the belief that we could win the game and scored through Davy to level on the night, however yet again lady luck desserted us and we left having been beaten 2-1. All credit to the players they have really pulled together over the past weeks and are working hard as a team.

Tomorrow we play Stoneyburn Juniors who visited the Academy a few weeks ago where we took all 3 points with a last minute penalty so tomorrow’s game should be a close one.

On the squad front we have Davy Stewart back in the fold, with Matty also available however Darran, Robbo and James are still out with injury. Andy and I will look at what players we have available and select the team for the day from there.

Spartans Sunday amateurs win the league – CHAMPIONEEEEEEEES

Friday, May 4th, 2012

Today we travelled to Saughton 3G, home of Oxgangs AFC. with both teams still playing for the league in the very last game of the season.

We Made it hard for ourselves last week against Sporting Chesser. In what should’ve been an easy win, we ended up scoring in the last five mins to make it 2.2.

Today we knew a draw would be good enough for us to win the league with Oxgangs needing a win.

We defended well, knowing that Oxgans had to come as us and we hoped that we could have caught them on the counter attack. We didn’t create many chances and most of the poseesion was won and lost at the half way line.

Our best chance came from Dean Gibson who stayed onside to find himself one on one with their goalkeeper. All Dean needed to do was take the ball past the keeper and he would have had an easy tap in, but Dean decided to lob the keeper and the ball going wide.

Manager Dean philp said ” We have had a fantastic season and winning the league has been a great achievement for us. Before the season started, our objective was to win something this year to add to what we won last season, to be league winners is always the best as it judges you for all of the season. We won the league undefeated, an achievement that’s never been done before.

We got to a Semi final of the league cup and didn’t show up that day. Bluebird where worthy winners. We also got to the last eight in the Scottish cup, again this is the furtherst a team from the EADSAFA has got to.

I am very proud of all our players who have played a part in winning the league. Some are still with us and some have left mid season but they have all played a huge part. I thank you all for your hard work.

A few thanks…

First of all, to my assistant manager Jimmy Louden. Thank you for all the hard work over the season. Your hard work and commitment has been great and I have learnt a lot from you this year.

I said commitment… I still can’t believe you were going to give up seeing the birth of your 1st grandson to be at the game. I think your words were ” Don’t give birth on Sunday, I’ll be at the football” Great lad!

Keith Kinnaird Snr. (Coach) Keith, Jimmy, the team and myself, we have all learnt so much from you. Your a fantatsic coach and it has been a pleasure working and learning from you. I can’t believe you are retiring from the game! Hopefully I can get you out of retirement to take on the Jambos at tynecastle next year?

Craig Graham. Thank you for giving me the oppertunity to be part of Spartans. This is a fantatsic club and I appreciate being at the club.

Last but not least. Kenny Cameron. I know I have said it before, but I wouldn’t be at Spartans without your help. You bugged me for two years to merge with you when I had Newton heath. I am glad you kept at me when you knew you where going in to the juniors.

I took on a great team but even more so, a great bunch of guys. We now have a winning mentality and I am sure that after winning the league this seasonm, next season we will go on to bigger and better things!

See you all next season.

Management thoughts on our trip to Fernieside tomorrow

Friday, May 4th, 2012

Mike says -

“Having had a look at the Tynecastle team the last time they played it’s obviously the influence the Stevens brothers have made as only one or two of the players who took to the park at the Academy in our corresponding home league fixture played in their win against Selkirk. The home side tomorrow look safe in our tight league but I’m sure the Tynecastle management team will be wanting one more win to push them away from the group at the bottom.

We are without John Grant tomorrow but are hopeful Donal Henretty is fit enough to take part. The return to grass after an absence of nearly four months has seen our form stutter somewhat but if we are to retain our title we need to hit the ground running at Fernieside. Our destiny is in our own hands and with our two title rivals playing each other tomorrow we have a chance to push further away from at least one of them.

Tynecastle will have other ideas about that. It should be an entertaining game.”

Sunday Amateurs win league, 19s reach cup final however Women’s team lose

Sunday, April 29th, 2012

Congratulations to Dean Philp and his team who won the Edinburgh Sunday Amateur Premier League this afternoon to cap a great season.
Well done also to the 19s who beat Edinburgh City 6 – 2 in the Jimmy Lynch Memorial Cup semi final. We raced to a 5 – 2 lead at half time with goals from Scott McPherson 2, Lee Brown, Jordan Finnie, James Cuthbertson and Callum Donnelly. We done to coaches Chris Anderson and Keith Boyes who have the squad playing some great football.
Finally our Women’s team went down 2 – 0 to Forfar this afternoon in a league game. It was even at half time and we had plenty of the ball in the second half but created few chances as Forfar hit us on he break with two strikes.
