SPFL 2: Hendo hit sees Spartans reign in the rain against ForfarBlair Henderson was the toast of Ainslie Park after The Spartans got back to winning ways in SPFL 2 as they edged out Forfar Athletic in foul conditions. Following a week of no action due to being frozen out at Fife, Spartans were keen to pick up where they left off against Arbroath in the Scottish Cup and the only change was indeed Henderson returning to the starting XI at the expense of the injured Paul Watson. The game got under way with the rain lashing down and creating a slippy surface that saw the ball scoot about when it wasn’t up in the air during the early stages. One of those aerial exchanges saw Jordan Tapping get onto a Blair Henderson knock-down from a free-kick sent into the box however his header went wide. Meanwhile at the other end, Munro was to come closest for the visitors when he sent his shot past the post. Sandwiched in between saw former Spartans favourite Mark Whately produce a fine Judo style move on Cammy Russell following an alleged foul having been committed by the home player. It was for sure a first half for the purists and the players trundled up the tunnel for a much welcomed heat. HT: The Spartans 0-0 Forfar Athletic In what was his 112 and final game for the club, Mikey Allan sure left one of his best tackles for last when he put in a powerful challenge shortly after the interval to deny the tourists the opportunity to build a platform to progress. The rain was now joined by the wind as it swept across the Ainslie Park arena making any form of fast flowing football a luxury for the 356 crowd who braved it out. Midway through the half, Spartans made their first change, with Sean Brown coming on for Jamie Dishington. Then, five minutes later, the deadlock was broken. James Craigen’s long range speculative strike was headed into the air by a Forfar defender. Rhys Armstrong was involved in the resultant aerial battle, the ball landing at the feet of Jordan Tapping took a swing and a shot. It fell to Blair Henderson who may not have been expecting it but directed the ball beyond the rooted Marc McCallum and into the net. As the game entered the final stages, further changes for the home side came through Sam Jones and Gavin Morrison who replaced Rhys Armstrong and goal scorer Blair Henderson. Forfar looked for a late way back into the game and when they created a neat overlap down the flank, it saw the ball sent sharply across the face of the six yard box however an alert Blair Carswell reacted well and got down to smother. A final change saw Ayrton Sonkur replacing James Craigen. It was Sonkur who was on hand to clean up and get the ball to safety as Forfar launched another assault on the box, looking for a hand from the minging conditions. Thankfully it wasn’t to be and after several nail biting minutes of added time, the final whistle blew. Phew! FT: The Spartans 1-0 Forfar Athletic Malt and Hops Man of the Match: Jordan Tapping |
