Skipper Subo sets sights on successful start to Spartans seasonThere been lots of column inches published. Plenty online debate had and many a keyboard thrashed. It’s the footballing equivalent of Christmas Eve as we reach one more sleep before we unwrap the start of our Lowland League campaign. The Spartans head to Broadwood Stadium first up as we take on Open Goal Broomhill FC, looking to get our season off to a winning start in what is an eagerly awaited contest between the sides. Retaining the coveted Captain’s armband this season is talismanic midfielder Ian McFarland. After a pre-season campaign that saw the side enriched by a series of key summer signings, the skipper was in confident mood as the countdown to kick-off continues. “I think this pre-season has been at it’s highest level of intensity and professionalism since I joined the club six years ago, from both the players and the management team. The way the squad has been utilised and the match minutes shared through player rotation with the main goal to try and get as many boys fit and firing for the start of the season. “The main focus throughout a tough pre-season programme has been on preparation for Broomhill on Saturday with everyone putting the team first and working on being dynamic out of the traps. That focus has been different than before too as this is the biggest squad we’ve had, certainly since I joined, with genuine competition for places in the Gaffer’s match day squad.” 31 year old McFarland, added, “This will be key too as we kick-off the season with four matches in just ten days. For me personally, I’m keen to ensure that we put out a statement early doors. Obviously you can’t win the league within the first few weeks, but you can do yourself a bit of harm if you don’t take the points you need that will make a crucial difference come the end of the season.” “It may be a perennial cliché, but the Lowland League is going to have its toughest season yet. Any team in the league has the ability to take points off each other and we’ll need to prepare in the proper fashion one game at a time and go out for the win each time.” “Its obviously a massive season for Spartans, all the boys are really looking forward to it. The League title is the main priority for us and we will continue to do what is required to achieve our goal.” Open Goal Broomhill FC vs. The Spartans FC Saturday 23rd July 2022 | Broadwood Stadium | 3.00pm Kick Off Admission £9, Concession: £6 (Over 65’s & U14’s). |
