Lowland League | Unbeaten run comes to an end against EK

Spartans unbeaten run came to a halt at the weekend as they fell to three first half goals against East Kilbride at Ainslie Park.

The match got under a blanket of North Edinburgh blue sky however it turned to grey after just six minutes when Cameron Elliot fired the visitors home.

Malt and Hops Man of the Match Cammy Russell set off on a mission to level proceedings when he darted in-field from the stand side touchline progressing to the EK box, but his passageway was closed down before he could trouble the keeper.

Spartans were then awarded a free-kick just outside the box, however when the ball was flighted into the box, Conor Brennan between the EK sticks double fisted it to safety.

McManus then made it two for the visitors on the half hour mark offering Spartans an uphill battle to maintain their recent unbeaten run.

Cammy Russell’s free-kick after being upended 25 yards out was inches away as Spartans sought a way back into the game.

The striker then had the post denying him after a fantastic Sam Jones run that opened up an opportunity, only for the ball to hit the base of the woodwork.

Then, with half-time on the horizon, East Kilbride made it 0-3.

Spartans needed an early second half way back into the game however despite some huff and puff akin to the Wolf of 3 Little Pigs nursery rhyme fame, the EK defence wouldn’t let them in.

A change within the hosts set-up saw Rhys Caves replace Allan Smith.

Russell once again found himself denied by the gloves of Brennan who single – or more accurately double – handedly – kept him out.

Going into the last ten minutes, Dougie Samuel rolled another throw of the dice from the bench, with Under 20s players Chris Inglis and Mackenzie Scott replacing Newman and Jones.
