Lowland League | Spartans lose out to Rangers BCammy Russell’s late strike offered a solitary crumb of consolation at Dumbarton as The Spartans lost 7-1 to a talented Rangers B side in the Lowland League. Ryan Finnie made his ‘debut’ after formally putting pen to paper for the Ainslie Park side who went into the game one point behind the Ibrox youths. The iconic view of ‘the rock’ looked down over the C&G Systems ground, as picturesque a setting you’ll find in Scottish Football. It was the ideal start for the hosts within the opening 60 seconds with the ball whipped into a busy six-yard box and, according to the Rangers match report, Kane Ritchie-Hosler gains the credit at the front post for ensuring the ball made it past Carswell. Rangers had the ball in the net again but it was ruled offside however they doubled their lead in the 12th minute after Alegria lobbed Carswell and despite the valiant efforts on the goalline, the far side lino raced to the centre spot to signal it had gone beyond the whitewash. Jamie Dishington came close to reducing the deficit however he could only find the side-netting. Mikey Allan then made a darting run, only to be pulled down on his travels. The free-kick wasn’t to trouble the home defence. Rangers then added a third through McCann and before the break, Devine made it 4-0. It took a textbook top stop from Blair Carswell to keep the tally down as the sides made their way back to the sheds. HT: Rangers B 4-0 The Spartans Any hopes of an early push for a comeback were thwarted when McCausland sent his shot into the net. Adding injury to insult then saw Mikey Allan helped from the field after hurting himself during a tackle. He was subsequently replaced by Scott Maxwell. Two goals in a five minute spell completed the home sides scoring. As games across the league were forced into early abandonment due to snow, there wasn’t a flake in the Dumbarton sky however there was to be a late consolation for Dougie Samuel’s side when Cammy Russell poked the ball beyond Hogarth in the Rangers box to slide home into the empty net.
