Lowland League | Report : Spartans 0-2 Bonnyrigg Rose

Posted on Monday, November 16th, 2020

Spartans fell to goals either side of the interval as Rose secured all three points at Ainslie Park.

Both sides used the early minutes to knock the ball around with consummate ease inside their own halves but when it came to making a degree of penetration into the opposition danger areas, the keepers were mere bystanders at either end of the eerily quiet Ainslie Park.

Despite the hosts shading it in terms of the lion’s share of the early possession pie, it was the visitors who took the lead in the 23rd minute when Kieran McGachie, looking in an offside position, played the whistle and scooped the ball over the outstretched arms of Harry Stone to guide it into the net, despite the last gasp valiant efforts of Adam Corbett on the line.

Stone was in action a short while later when he came out to smother an opportunity for former Spartans player George Hunter. The keeper getting to the ball first and the Referee pulling out the yellow card for the Rose man for trying too hard in taking the tumble.

A decent strike by Sam Jones stung the gloves of Mark Weir between the Bonnyrigg sticks as Spartans looked to get back on level terms.

Scott Maxwell was next to have a pop at goal, this time from a long range free-kick, with Weir pushing the ball to safety.

A speculative clearance up the field by Mikey Allan saw Archie Meekison nick the ball off the foot of Robert Wilson however the neat play sadly wasn’t matched by the final effort, which sailed over the bar.

A couple of substitutions saw Daniel Baur and Joe Tait introduced at the expense of the injured Allan and Woods as Spartans looked to refresh the armoury.

Shortly after, it was a second for McGachie after he picked up the ball on the edge of the box before enticing Corbett into going to ground before slotting past Stone.

A last throw of the dice saw Cameron Dawson and Aaron Murrell come on for McCrory-Irving and Meekison.

Spartans came close to halving the deficit when Scott Maxwell let fly and his piledriver was pushed away for a corner. A few corners in quick succession later, Aaron Murrell collected the ball but his turn and shot was gathered by Weir.
