Lowland League | Spartans get season going at GretnaThe wait is finally over! Football is back! Sadly without fans at this juncture, however the Lowland League finally kicks off this weekend and The Spartans are on the road to open their campaign against Gretna 2008 at Raydale Park. Infused by new signings during the extended close season, gaffer Dougie Samuel takes his squad down the M74 looking for the ideal start and bringing three opening day points back up to the capital come 4.45pm. Dan Baur, John Grant, Sam Jones, Scott McCrory-Irvine, and Archie Meekison have all joined up since last time out, whilst Gregor Woods has put pen to paper to make his previous loan spell a permanent feature. The fixture sees the sides pick up where they should have left off earlier in the year as it was the next game on the cards before the Covid pandemic shut down football. Our hosts have been busy over the summer, installing their new floodlights plus signing dangerman Shaun Rodgers from Morton on loan. The young striker has been in fine form in front of goal and will be one to watch for the Spartans defence who have kept back to back clean sheets in their last two pre-season friendlies. Remember, no spectators will be allowed in to the ground due to current Scottish Government regulations. Lowland League Tale of the Tape: Played 12 | Spartans 10 wins | Gretna 2 wins Goals | Spartans 28 | Gretna 7 Both Gretna victories have come on their home turf, a 2-0 win in 2014-15 and a narrow 1-0 success in August 15. The biggest margin between the sides is a 0-4 win for Spartans at Raydale Park in 2018-19. |
