Tolmie: Tunnock’s tie is a great wafer Spartans to build momentum

Spartans head to the Penny Cars Stadium tonight where they take on Motherwell Colts in the opening round of this year’s deliciously titled Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup.

Speaking ahead of the cup clash, Spartans talismanic defender Blair Tolmie noted how the stalwart was looking forward to building on Saturday’s success against Edinburgh University and the chance to push themselves against a talented Colts side on ‘neutral’ turf.

Tolmie said, “It was important to get a win at the weekend and almost importantly, a clean sheet too as we head into tonight’s game. Personally, it’s a wee bit disappointing that we aren’t playing Motherwell at Fir Park – and that’s no disrespect to Airdrie of course – you draw these sides and hope to play in a big stadium atmosphere, but we still need to go and try and win the game, irrespective of the venue.

“Just like the rest of the boys, it’s going to be a step up but in many ways that’s enjoyable too. I like playing against the Colts sides in some respects as they tend to play in a uniformed fashion.

“They play from the back, keep the ball and play some nice football in front of you, but you know, as an old man at the back, they don’t generally thrown the ball down your throat. But we’ll see how it pans out on the pitch on the night.”

The Cup games offer Manager Dougie Samuel the opportunity to utilise the squad in what is a typically busy opening few weeks of the competitive calendar.

Tolmie added, “The gaffer is likely to freshen it up I guess, I might even just need to bring my slippers for the bench instead of my boots, we’ll just have to wait and see. It’s important for some of the young lads to get valuable and quality game time along with pushing themselves too. Guys like Mikey (Allan) will likely feature I’m sure and (Cameron) Dawson will be buzzing after scoring on Saturday and will be keen to build on that.

”We could also see more of Max Ashmore who looked sharp in his debut against the Uni and he’s another Weegie who likes talking!”

Kick-off is at 7.45pm and played to a finish. Each supporter will receive a FREE Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer at the turnstiles were admission will be £10 Adults and £5 Concessions. The winners will face Clyde away on Tuesday 13th August.
