Spartans Snippets: Fixture change, Amateurs win and Under 20s go nap

Posted on Sunday, September 10th, 2017

Spartans will play Vale of Leithen in their William Hill Scottish Cup Round 1 tie at Ainslie Park on Friday 22nd September with a 7.45pm KO.

Should the match not take place on that date it will be re-scheduled for Saturday 30th September at Ainslie Park with a 3.00pm kick-off.  In the event of a draw, the replay would be on Saturday 30th September at Victoria Park, Innerleithen with a 3.00pm kick-off.

In other Cup news, we will take on Ormiston at Ainslie Park on Sunday 22nd October in the SFA South Region Cup Round 2, with a 3pm kick-off.

With under 20s setting the bar for the weekend with 9 goals and the 1st XI securing three points at Peffermill, the Saturday Amateurs made it a hat-trick of Spartans wins with a 4-3 victory over North Merchiston Vale in the 1st Round of the Challenge Cup.

Darren Nicol opening the scoring for the home team 15 minutes before half time.  The lead was short lived as Vale capitalised on a defensive error.  Advantage Spartans was restored five minutes before the break when Craig Jenkinson fed Paul Clarkson who beat his marker to whip the ball into the path of Liam Tomassi who didn’t need a written invitation to slam home.

It was a case of deja vu after the break when an excellent piece of football saw Darren Nicol get his second goal of the game and put the home team 3-1 up.

The visitors got back into the game and for the second time in the match, pulled another goal back. It took a wonder goal from Marc Milligan to then make it 4-2 in a pulsating encounter.   With one eye perhaps already on the draw for Round 2, a Vale strike five minutes from the end offered the Spartans touchline some squeekybumtime as the seventh goal of the afternoon was netted to make it 4-3!

Resolute defending and nail biting were deployed in equal measure and it is Spartans who head into the next round at home to either Craigshill or St Bernards.

With Preston Athletic withdrawing their Under 20s outfit from the League, Les Atkison’s side took on Eyemouth United in a friendly on Friday night at the Academy.

Boosted by the news that Lewis Grant has signed on loan for another season from Brora Rangers as he continues his studies at Napier Uni, the 20s were in blistering form, hitting nine goals without reply.  There were braces for Dawson, Hetherington and Singh whilst the aforementioned Grant got in on the goals as did Archibald and Hand.
