Beesley bags brace in Borders winJack Beesley netted a double as Spartans ran out 0-4 winners against Hawick Royal Albert in a quagmire at Albert Park. With the recent wet spell in the Borders, the ground was, in Horse Racing terms, “soft” ahead of kick-off and the players learnt quickly that the ball wasn’t up for bouncing much too on the heavy paddock. Paul Thomson was unlucky not to see his header open the deadlock early on, with Sean Conaghan hooking his net bound attempt off the line and away to safety. It took until the 33rd minute before the deadlock was broken. Alan Brown’s penetrating run moments earlier had the hosts on the ropes and just sixty seconds later, fine build up play by Scott Maxwell allowed him to set up Brown who slid the ball home. Ross Allum doubled the visitors advantage benefitting from the wizardry of Jack Beesley just five minutes later who skipped to the bye-line before passing to Allum who didn’t need a written invitation to find the net. It was the aforementioned Beesley who scored the best of the batch two minutes before the break with a sensational solo effort. Collecting the ball on the edge of the box, he weaved in and out of the Hawick defenders like a slalom skier through the gates on the Courchevel slopes and drilled low beyond Andy Jack. HT: Hawick RA 0-3 Spartans The Hawick Hairdryer must have been deployed at the interval as the home side came out of the sheds in a positive fashion. Several periods of possession gave the merry band of home fans hope of a comeback however they were met with an impenetrable blue wall of Spartans defenders. The scoring was complete midway through the second half from the penalty spot. Hawick keeper Jack can have little qualms over the Referee’s decision after his clumsy challenge upended Allum inside the box and set up Beesley to send him the wrong way. FT: Hawick RA 0-4 Spartans Spartans: Carswell, Herd, Stevenson, Tolmie, Thomson, Mair, Beesley (Dishington), Greenhill, Allum (Murray), Maxwell, Brown (Gabiola). Subs: (Unused) Saunderson, Comrie.
