Spartans first-fit Pennypitt in New Year opener

On the back of a five match unbeaten domestic run, Spartans head to Pennypitt for the tricky tangle against Preston Athletic in the first outing of 2017.

After a Hogmanay helping of three points at home against Welfare, Dougie Samuel will be out to build on the recent fine vein of form against current basement dwellers Preston who would appear to have counted themselves unlucky last weekend in a seven goal thriller against Civil at the East Lothian venue.

Third place Spartans will be without Jack Hay (flu) and Chris Townsley (injured) for the trip east whilst Scott Maxwell is ruled out as he is celebrating the arrival of a mini-Maxwell!

Last time out, the sides met in a midweek encounter that saw Spartans edge out 10 man Athletic in a tousy tussle at Ainslie Park, with Beesley and Maxwell finding the net in a 2-1 victory.
