Spartans progress in Football Nation Cup after Hawick win

Posted on Monday, November 2nd, 2015

Goals from Dean Horribine and Keith Murray secured ten-man Spartans passage into Round 3 of the Football Nation Qualifying Cup after disposing of Hawick Royal Albert at Ainslie Park.

Despite the dull overhead conditions Spartans made a bright start scoring within 5 minutes after a flowing move involving Greenhill, Murrell, Brown and Murray to set up Horribine who headed home.

The lead was doubled two minutes from the break when Murrell’s through pass was clinically finished by Murray.

The one-way traffic continued in the second half with Murray having three attempts within ten minutes to keep Rankin in the Albert goal busy.

In a rare breakaway in the 65th minute, Faye was challenged from behind by Malone and after careful consideration referee McMullen produced a red card for the Spartans defender.

The game fizzled out thereafter with the home side content to keep possession without troubling the goal.
