Atkinson’s Blairy story ending as last gasp goal gains victory at Gannochy

Spartans East of Scotland side sit top of their Qualifying Group table with a 100% record after making it two from two with a dramatic win against University of Stirling at Gannochy.

An 89th minute winner from on-form striker Blair Atkinson completed the side’s comeback against their Stirling University counterparts in the second of their Qualifying Group games.

A goal-free first half saw neither sides create many chances however the game came to life midway through the second half when Jeff Kessie opened the scoring for the hosts in the 70th minute.

That lead was short lived as Chris Anderson continued his recent form in front of goal with an equaliser five minutes later.

With the scores tied at 1-1, Stirling were awarded a penalty with just 5 minutes left on the clock. Ross Gilpin was shown the red card and Danny O’Donnell took over between the sticks. The big defender’s goalie skills weren’t needed as the spot-kick was sent flying over the bar.

In the other group fixture, Duns beat Kelso 7-2.   Spartans head to Kelso on Saturday, keen to continue their winning ways.
