Race for Second Place continues in early evening Innerleithen encounterSpartans travel to the Borders on Wednesday evening to take on Vale of Leithen in the Race for Second Place in this season’s Scottish Sun Lowland League. After a short period of inactivity, the Ainslie Park side head to Victoria Park knowing only a win will keep them in contention for the Runners-up spot at the end of the season. With four games left in the domestic campaign, Assistant Manager Gary Smith is backing the side to get back on the pitch and continue the unbeaten run that commenced after their heroic Scottish Cup journey. “Perhaps somewhat understandably, preparations for Vale have been a wee bit more difficult simply down to us now having had any games for two weeks. “Obviously it’s important to get a bit of momentum going and have at least one game a week but we’ve now had back-to-back Saturdays without the high tempo of match day minutes. However, the attitude in training has been superb and the lads are chomping at the bit. “On the plus side I guess, the rest period ensures those with niggles and knocks have maximum recovery time to get back in contention for a starting spot on Wednesday.” With a maximum 12 points still up for grabs, Spartans have a game in hand on the chasing pack and a win could propel them to 4th place. Smith added, “There’s several teams jostling for second spot and we’ll be out to put together a winning run to ensure we give everything in the tank to finish as high up the table as we can. This starts on Wednesday.” The match at Victoria Park, Innerleithen, kicks-off at 6.30pm to accommodate for the light. There’s one other league fixture being played on Wednesday, with a similar kick-off time, at Rosewell, where Whitehill take on Selkirk. |
