King Cup Joy for East of Scotland Side

Posted on Tuesday, March 10th, 2015

Last Saturday with the senior side idle it was down to the East of Scotland side to provide our supporters with their usual intake of football.

Ormiston FC travelled to Ainslie Park for a King Cup 2nd round tie with a quarter final place at stake.  The weather for the day was more suited to flying a kite however it was the same blustery conditions for both sides.

The East Lothian outfit have been doing very well in the first division this season and they are playing with a lot of confidence, scoring goals and sitting in 2nd place in the league.

The game started very lively and Ormiston had a goal disallowed for offside within the opening 2 minutes – a warning to our players not to be too complacent.

Kevin Swain, making his return to goalkeeping duty following a corneal abrasion with the Lowland League side a few weeks ago, then had to look lively following a short pass back before clearing the danger.

With 26 minutes gone we took the lead when Ian Ballantyne struck a shot from just inside the Ormiston half which completely out foxed their goalkeeper and landed in the back of the visitors net.

Ormiston pulled level within 5 minutes.  The Spartans defence failed to clear the initial danger and it took a well taken strike to beat Swain.

Shortly after, Spartans were awarded a free kick just outside the box and Davy Stewart struck the bar with a great shot. Then with 5 minutes to go to half time we were awarded another free kick this time the same player fired the ball over the defensive wall and into the net.

Half Time: Spartans 2-1 Ormiston

As the second half progressed, Spartans created a number of chances but could not add to their lead whilst at the other end, they were forced to defend well.  Kevin Swain and Eddie Malone providing some much needed experience at the back with Barry Milven ruled out of the game with an injury sustained the previous week at Easthouses.
