City claim Image rights in cup clash

Spartans bowed out of the Image Printers Cup after a sixty second first half double whammy set up a 0-3 victory for Edinburgh City at Ainslie Park.

Dougie Samuel made a handful of changes, personnel and positional, to the side that drew with Berwick Rangers at the weekend as Spartans looked to keep another cup run intact.

In a first half of littered with loose play and a handful of industrial challenges, it was Gary Jardine’s men who delivered a body blow to Spartans silverware ambitions with goals in the 10th & 11th minutes from Dominic Gibson & Ross Guthrie.

Jack Beacher had one of Spartans limited attempts at Andrew Stobie’s goal four minutes before the interval however the keeper was equal to the task.

Half Time: Spartans 0-2 Edinburgh City

Spartans started the second half with a greater sense of urgency. Willie Bremner & Jack Beesley linking well inside the City box however his shot sliced wide of Stobie’s near post.

Midway through the second half, Gibson let fly from the edge of the box and watched his strike sail high into the corner of net despite a despairing dive by Swain in the Spartans goal.

Spartans looked like they’d grabbed an 89th minute consolation when Henretty headed the ball into the net from a Beesley corner however the stand-side linesman raised his flag to rule the attempt offside.

Final Score: Spartans 0-3 Edinburgh City
