Uni Up To The Challenge As They Snatch A PointEdinburgh University fought back to earn a point following a 1-1 draw this afternoon following a feisty encounter.Craig Stevenson and John Grant returned to the Spartans starting side as Dougie Samuel was able to give more game time to a number of players returning from injury. Following a good start by Spartans, play was stopped in the 26th minute as John Grant went down injured after a heavy tackle in midfield. Following several minutes of treatment he limped off the park and was unable to return. Before his replacement, Kevin Motion, could get onto the Park Spartans took a deserved lead in the 31st minute. Willie Bremner forced a good save from Uni keeper Asher Tufail but the ball fell to Jack Beesley who placed the ball into the net. Kevin Swain, who hadn’t much to do in the first half did well to get down low and stop a Ross Patterson strike just before the half. Jack Beesley and Keith McLeod both had good chances however Asher Tufail was able to keep the ball out of the net, much to the frustration of the Spartans attack. Stuart MacFarlane sparked the Spartans bench into life when he scythed down Kevin Motion with a high late tackle. Referee Jordan Stokoe showed the Uni defender a yellow for his trouble. Uni then pulled themselves level in the 83rd minute. Willie Bremner gave away a free kick on the edge of the box and from that Jack Guthrie got his head to the resulting kick and looped the ball into the far corner of the net. The game once again sparked into life in the 85th minute when following a tussle on the edge of the box referee Stokoe surprised everyone when he showed Keith McLeod a straight red card. Hamish Flett was also shown a 2nd yellow for his part in the incident. Spartans continued to look for a winner and the pace of substitute Errol Douglas was causing the Uni defence problems, however they held on for an important point. Malt & Hops Man of the Match: Ally MacKinnon – a solid performance at the back and played on even after taking a knock following an excellent challenge. Team: Swain, Brown, Cennerazzo, Trialist, MacKinnon, Stevenson, Beesley, Grant (Motion), Bremner, McLeod, Sludden (Douglas) Unused: Thomson, Beacher, Jackson |
