Spartans Have to Settle for a Point in Peffermill Premiere

Posted on Thursday, September 18th, 2014

A late thunderbolt from substitute Callum Irvine earned Edinburgh University a point after an entertaining game which marked the opening the of the impressive new Peffermill facility.

As the misty weather engulfed the New East Peffermill complex, visibility was poor for the majority of the match. Both sides seemed content to get the ball down and pass it around during the opening stages, with few chances being created.

The match sprung into life in the 23rd minute as the hosts took the lead from a deep cross, Tim Rawlinson rising highest to head the ball past Kevin Swain at the back post.

Dougie Samuel looked for a quick response from his players and that’s exactly what he got four minutes later. Willie Bremner’s defence-splitting pass found Jack Beacher, the former Uni striker evading the despairing dive of the out-rushing keeper before firing into an empty net.

Jack Beacher was forced off injured midway through the first-half following a timely interjection which he was unable to recover from, Sean Muhsin his replacement.

Spartans were awarded a penalty in the 70th minute after Bremner was bundled to the deck by a Uni defender. Motion, doing what he does best from the spot, rifled the ball low past the keeper into the far corner.

Just as Spartans seemingly looked set to take all three points, a spirited late fight back from the hosts saw those hopes dashed. Firstly Kevin Sivewright hooked the ball of the line as the home side pressed hard for an equaliser, before up popped substitute Callum Irvine. The midfielder unleashed a thunderous strike which sailed high into the top left-hand corner beyond the reach of the out-stretched Swain.

Malt & Hops Man of the Match: John Grant – a superb battling performance from John who distributed the ball well and covered a huge amount of ground.
