Motion Secures A Vital Point With Last Minute PenaltyAn injury time penalty from Kevin Motion secured 10 man Spartans a vital point at home to East Kilbride in the Scottish Sun Lowland League.Spartans had never scored a goal against Kilby in their previous two meetings, while the South Lanarkshire side came into todays game having not conceded a goal and sitting top of the league after 3 games. Spartans were also without a number of key players as John Grant and Jack Beesley were unavailable while centre half Ally MacKinnon injured his hamstring earlier in the day. It meant an unusual looking side took to the field for kick off. Things could not have started better however as Errol Douglas made room on the right wing and his looping cross into the box was volleyed home by Kevin Motion after just 4 minutes. Spartans had a strong penalty claim in the 15th minute when one of the East Kilbride defenders appeared to handle the ball as he blocked an Errol Douglas shot, however the referee waved play on. Kilby had their first chance after 22 minutes however Liam Gormley fired well over when he had a clear shot at goal. The match was delayed shortly after as Spartan Michael Herd appeared to break his ankle as he fell awkwardly when jumping to head the ball. Following some extensive treatment he was carried off to be replaced by Brad Raiker who made his Lowland League debut for the club. Willie Bremner could have doubled the lead in the 14th minute of injury time in the first half when he got his head onto a superb Craig Stevenson cross. East Kilbride keeper Jacob Kean did brilliant though to turn the ball away for a corner kick. Spartans started the 2nd half with intent and Alan Brown was inches away from turning home a Gary Cennerazzo cross in the 46th minute, however he couldn’t get enough contact on it and the ball flew wide. East Kilbride then found themselves level in bizarre circumstances in the 54th minute. A lobbed ball into the box by Harry Mitchell hit the head of Mike Bruce and looped over keeper Kevin Swain. Spartans thought they had got themselves back ahead a few moments later when Gary Cennerazzo curled a shot from the edge of the box into the net. After initially awarding the goal, the referee noticed his assistant had raised his flag and decided to chalk off the goal, much to the bemusement and frustration of the Spartans crowd. Kilby got themselves ahead in the 67th minute, once again through an own goal as Kevin Swain turned a shot from a tight angle however the ball bounced off Kevin Motion and into his own net. East Kilbride were awarded a penalty in the 77th minute when the assistant referee awarded a penalty after the referee had judged simulation following a tackle from Mike Bruce on the edge of the box, however keeper Kevin Swain did well to turn to his right and save the kick. Moments later, sub Donal Henretty who had come on to make his 400th appearance was bizarrely shown a straight red card for trying to get the ball back and take a quick free kick. It was certainly not how the Spartans legend wanted to mark his major milestone and once again the Spartans supporters were enraged as it seemed everything was going against their side. Spartans however didn’t give up and were awarded a penalty kick deep into injury time as a ball into the box came off the arm of one of the Kilby defenders. Kevin Motion stepped up and fired the ball into the right hand corner of the net to save his side a vital point. Malt & Hops Man of the Match: Kevin Motion – a superb finish for both goals and showed a huge amount of character following his own goal to step up and get the vital equaliser Spartans: Swain, Herd (Raiker), Cennerazzo, Sivewright, Bruce, Stevenson, Brown, Muhsin (Henretty), Douglas (McLeod), Motion Unused: O’Donnell, Gilpin
