Spartans sign off season with fitting final Swan songSpartans sign off their season as the inaugural Scottish Sun Lowland League Champions on Tuesday night taking on the cream of the East of Scotland League in the Ronnie Swan Challenge Cup (7.45pm ko).The match will feature the unusual prospect of Spartans players battling it out against each other with a trio named in Select manager Garry Aitchison’s squad. The teams will play for the wonderful piece of silverware that is the Ronnie Swan Challenge Cup. Ronnie epitomised everything that is good about the Spartans. Swan, an Edinburgh dentist, held every position in the Club, from player to president, for over 50 years. “He was a true Spartan, he was a loyal Spartan, he was a great Spartan – he was Mr Spartans!” noted Colin Hutchison is his wonderfully fitting and heart-warming obituary in the Scotsman to celebrate the life of Ronnie following his sad passing away on March 3rd this year. Hutchison’s obituary article is published in the match programme and well worth a read. When Spartans moved from City Park to Ainslie Park in 2009, the occasion was marked with the Ronnie Swan Trophy being donated by club lawyer, Jim Martin. Team names on the trophy so far are the Spartans, Hearts, Ronnie’s two teams and Manchester United. Chris Anderson and Danny Main will both play their final games for Spartans on Tuesday night and a big Spartan Army cheer for their efforts is guaranteed. The Club would respectfully ask that all supporters please give generously at the gate to the Alzheimer’s Society. |
