Spartans u19s Clamber to Final Victory Over Musselburgh

Posted on Sunday, April 13th, 2014

Spartans u19s picked up their first piece of silverware this season following  a 1-0 win over Musselburgh in the League Cup Final.

The game at St. Marks Park was effected badly by the windy and wet conditions as both sides struggled at times to play the neat passing football they usually display. It took until the 85th minute to find the winner, however they did so in sensational style as Paul Dickson’s attempt from 40 yards flew into the net.

Dickson was delighted with his goal after the game however was keen to focus on the performance of the whole team.
“I’m absolutely buzzing for the lads. The boys did brilliantly to pull through the game in such tough conditions. We fought really hard and have come away with the win and the trophy. That’s the most important thing.”

Manager Les Atkinson was please that both teams tried to play passing football, despite the conditions.
“The Cup final was spoiled as a spectacle due to the wind. Credit to all the players though as both sides tried to play neat football and there was nothing between us at half time. It took a wonder strike with just a few minutes left from Paul to see us over a line, it was a goal worthy of winning a cup final. Overall I think we probably edged the game but it was a tightly fought contest played in the correct spirit.”

Team: Carswell, Imlah, Player, Dickson, Oliff (Buchanan), Brown (Lackie), Raiker, McGrory, Mair, Atkinson, McIntosh (Tait) Unused: Armstrong, Carruthers

Man of the Match: Paul Dickson – A superb performance capped off by a wonderful goal.
