Spartans extend League lead in Rovers rout

Spartans extended their lead at the top of the Scottish Sun Lowland League with a 4-0 win over Threave Rovers.

A brace from Chris Anderson steered Spartans to their eight clean sheet of the season whilst securing three valuable league points.

The Spartans striker was pleased to get back in the goals and see his side continue their five month unbeaten run in the League, “It was a good team performance.  The first half was a bit flat from us, however we stepped up a gear in the second half and we had plenty chances to score more goals.”

The opening exchanges in a match played in excellent conditions for fast flowing football failed to produce any clear cut goalscoring chances and it took until the 17th minute before the first shot at goal.  An ambitious attempt Threave’s Sloan went skyward without troubling Bennett in the Spartans goal.

The conditions suited playmaker Jack Beesley and his cross-come-shot was cleared by Parker for a corner.   Motion’s delivery into the box appeared to take Keith McLeod by surprise and his effort from three yards was scooped over the bar.

Spartans eventually took the lead in the 31st minute. Beesley’s cross along the face of the goal was intercepted by Wilby however his attempted clearance hit the shins of Chris Anderson who guided the ball into the empty Rovers net.  1-0.

Half –Time: Spartans 1-0 Threave Rovers

The second half came to life as early as the 49th minute when Spartans doubled their lead.

Beesley was unlucky not to score when his free-kick curled it’s way round the wall before it crashed off the crossbar and fell to Anderson who obliged by tapping the ball in from close range. 2-0.

Double sub for Spartans as Donal Henretty & Sean Muhsin come on for John Grant and Willie Bremner.

With fifteen minutes to go, Spartans further extended their lead.  The industrious McLeod worked the ball into the path of Beesley who lifted the ball over Parker to nestle in the net to make it 3-0.

Gary Cennerazzo replaces Danny O’Donnell

The icing was on the cake in the 80th minute after Anderson made his way into the box before pushing the ball along the 6 yard line for McLeod to blast home his 26th in 26 appearances this season. 4-0.

Final Score: Spartans 4-0 Threave Rovers.

Nearest title challengers lost 1-0 on the road to a resurgent Whitehill however double scoring Anderson wasn’t reading too much into the result at Rosewell.

Anderson said, “It’s obviously a good result for Welfare and not one the Uni side were after however we just need to concentrate on ourselves and keep winning.  We are playing well at the moment and we’ll continue to work hard to maintain our momentum as the season builds up to the business end of proceedings.”

Spartans XI: Bennett, Grant, Main, Sivewright, O’Donnell, Motion, Brown, Beesley, Bremner, McLeod, Anderson.  Subs: Cennerazzo, Muhsin, Henretty, Whatley, Gilpin.
