Stalemate for Spartans

Posted on Saturday, February 8th, 2014

Keith McLeod’s attempt to break the British consecutive goal-scoring record fell at the final hurdle as Spartans were held to a 0-0 draw by East Kilbride.

The game set off at a frantic pace, with McLeod getting in behind the visitors defence within the opening sixty seconds however the Spartans hitman was deemed offside.

At the other end, it took a quarter of an hour for the visitors to get within range, only for Haddin’s strike to sail over Bennett’s bar.

Bennett had to look lively from a McDougall free-kick, throwing his body across the goalmouth to tip the ball past the post.

Motion’s turn and shot on the 18 yard box the pick of the other attempts in a first half that saw a lengthy stoppage following a clash of heads, Kilby’s Woods requiring treatment to a painful looking nose.

Half-Time: Spartans 0-0 East Kilbride

Spartans made the first of their three substitutions at half-time, with playmaker Mushin coming on for Main.

Mark Whatley’s shot on the hour mark was the first attempt of a second half that saw a midfield war of attrition breaking out.

Donal Henretty came on for Motion as Spartans gaffer Dougie Samuel looked for a way to chip away at a stubborn East Kilbride defence.

Henretty almost earned the tag of super sub moments after coming on, Meldrum pulling off a top class save to keep his side in the game.

A final change by Samuel saw Beesley come on for Brown and the replacement’s cross shortly after his introduction was smothered by Meldrum with McLeod looking to pounce on any mistakes.

The dying moments of the game was the ball crash off the visitors cross bar and Cenerrazzo’s shot from six yards agonisingly shaving the wrong side of the post.

The final whistle sounded, with Keith McLeod’s sensational goal scoring run being roundly applauded by the crowd.  He might not have been able to overtake Evelyn Morrison’s record however from everyone at the Club, it’s a big congratulations on equalling the 15 consecutive goal haul that’s stood for over 70 years.
