Spartans lose out in League Cup FinalA poor first 15 minutes in today’s game against Edinburgh City was enough to give the Meadowbank side a 2-0 victory to lift the Central Taxi’s League Cup at the ground of Civil Service Strollers.A good crowd was in attendance to make the most of the football and the fine weather as both sides looked to lift their first silverware of the season. We started the game without three key midfield players as Robbie Manson and Kevin Motion missed out through suspension while Mark Whatley is currently injured. The midfield situation was made worse early on as after just three minutes Willie Bremner needed to leave the field for treatment following a knock. He was able to return but just moments later City took the lead. John Grant was caught out when he tried to head the ball back to keeper Ross Gilpin. The ball fell short and Robbie Ross was able to race onto it, round the keeper and slot home. After 13 minutes it was John Grant who was again caught short as he flew into a tackle on Dougie Gair on the edge of the box and the referee rightly pointed to the spot. Gair himself took the penalty and although he scuffed his kick, the ball found its way into the bottom corner of the net. Willie Bremner had be be taken off after 15 minutes, was replaced by Sean Wringe as Dougie Samuel was forced to change his plans for the afternoon. Johnny Seeley had the first shot at goal after 35 minutes however it went well over and it took until the 45th minute for the first strike on target, Donal Henretty’s shot from 20 yards was however easily held. Spartans started the second half stronger as John Grant moved to midfield and Gary Cennerazzo shifted to right back. In fact it was Cennerazzo who was linking up well with Andy Martin, where we started to look threatening. After 60 minutes Spartans were awarded a penalty when Andy Martin was brought down in the box. Keith McLeod stepped up to take an excellent kick however Andrew Stobie in the City goal pulled off a great save to turn the ball round the post for a corner. We had lots more of the ball but struggled to create many clear scoring chances and Stobie was in fine form again in the 87th minute, as he tipped a McLeod header over the bar with a good reactive save and City held strong for a deserved win. Malt & Hops Man of the Match: Andy Martin – a hard working performance from Andy with our midfield being stretched to the maximum he did well to keep the City defenders on their toes especially in the second half. Team: Gilpin, Cennerazzo, Seeley, Sivewright, MacKinnon, Grant, Beesely, Bremner (Wringe(Ferguson)), Henretty, McLeod, Martin. Unused: McTurk, MacCuish, Anderson |
