Kings for a Day

Posted on Friday, April 26th, 2013

Tomorrow we face my old club for the third time this season. Despite their midweek defeat once again the Welfare come to Ainslie Park on the back of an excellent run of form….their sticky start to the season now a distant memory. Winning the Challenge Cup has fuelled their desire for more silverware. It may sound strange to some but for me the cup win combined with a surprise midweek loss is an equation which makes the challenge facing us tomorrow arguably our toughest test of the season to date.

We go into tomorrow’s game on the back of an excellent 5 – 1 win over Tynecastle a fortnight ago. Last time out we created lots of goal scoring opportunities…with 5 different scorers, a job well done. We now face two consecutive semi final games against our biggest rivals. In all four games we have played against Whitehill and Stirling Uni the results could have gone either way. There’s not much to choose between the top and bottom of the Premier Division this season, even less so between the so called big 3.
As I write this short piece we’ve still to make our mind up regarding team selection for tomorrow. Do we take a chance on one or two players, or save the players in the “at risk” category? Our shape and tactics will be answered by the answer to this one question. However one thing I know for sure…we are going to need everyone in our squad at different times to play their part in the business end of the season if we are to deliver silverware.

A constant theme throughout our season has been a strong focus and desire on making progress…week in and week out learning from our playing experiences, applying ourselves in training and working hard on developing a style of play which suits our current players. I genuinely believe we have made progress however to take the next step forward together as a group a semi final win and the opportunity to win a trophy sits at the very top of our list of short term objectives.
Our results and games so far vs the Welfare offer clear evidence that the game could go either way tomorrow (in boxing terms it’s a pick ’em fight)… I’m confident both sides will bring out the best in each other once more…around 4.30pm one side will be crowned “Kings for the Day”.
